A powerhouse performance of soul & funk-inspired contemporary blues presents this dynamic guitar/vocal duo at the top of their game and confirms them as leading lights in the UK’s contemporary blues and roots scene.
Ron Sayer Jr. is firmly established on the UK blues scene as the consumate ‘guitarist’s guitarist’. A classically trained musician and recipient of Guitarist Magazine’s prestigious Guitarist of the Year award he is cited as a strong influence on the playing of blues wunderkind Oli Brown as well as newcomers Dove & Boweevil’s Mark Howes. Music critic and Sunday Express editor Martin Townsend has described Ron as “a clever and unpredictable songwriter” a fact confirmed by several award wins and nominations.
As if this wasn’t enough talent for one album Ron is joined on Live at the Little Theatre by his ‘right hand man’, virtuoso vocalist Charlotte Joyce, for a thrilling live set which showcases material from their critically acclaimed albums Better Side and Hard To Please and breathes new life into some classic blues and rock numbers.
Recorded at this much-loved venue in Sheringham in their native Norfolk, Live at the Little Theatre sees Ron and Charlotte handing vocal duties back and forth, from Sayer taking the lead on the moody funk/rock of the self-penned opener Little White Lies, to Joyce’s raucous mash-up of both Willie Dixon and Hendrix’s tracks
Fire bringing the album proper to an incendiary close. Throughout the set we are treated to some show-stopping performances, notably Joyce’s soulful, impassioned delivery of her own Mr Weatherman or her take on the classic I’m Tore Down, given the New Orleans funk treatment by her own piano accompaniment and the first rate band. Indeed added value is provided by bassist Will Overton who proves himself to be a real asset with two very fine vocal performances on JB Lenoir’s Mojo Boogie and Sean Costello’s Anytime You Want.
And then there’s Ron Sayer’s assured, masterful playing, itself worth the price of admission alone. At times raucous and direct at others controlled and nuanced, Sayer’s guitar work informs and drives the whole performance, whether it be the energetic funk of Mañana, the country-rock licks of the single Time For Goodbye or the blues masterclass of the bonus track, Muddy Water’s I Wonder Who.
Live at the Little Theatre is the sound of a band at the height of their considerable powers, with no studio trickery or production to hide behind the musicians show themselves to be what they really are – a naturally great live band.
